A Country That Rewards Two Wheels

Hungary is not the first country most people think of when planning a cycling trip. That is precisely what makes it worth considering. The terrain is gentle across much of the country, the road infrastructure has improved significantly in recent years, and the distances between interesting places are manageable in a day's ride.

I have been cycling in Hungary since 2019, initially around Budapest and gradually expanding to longer routes. What keeps drawing me back is the variety. Within a two-hour ride of the capital you can follow the Danube through gorge-like bends, circle a volcanic lake, or cross flat plains that seem to go on without end.

These guides are based on routes I have actually ridden. I describe conditions as I found them, including the sections that were less enjoyable. The practical details — surface quality, signage, water stops — are the kind of things that matter when you are actually on a bike and not just reading about it.

Bike Rental

In Budapest, the MOL Bubi public bike-sharing system covers the city centre well. For longer routes, several rental shops near the Danube offer touring bikes and e-bikes by the day or week. Prices typically range from 3,000 to 8,000 HUF per day depending on the type of bike.

Best Season

April through October is the main cycling season. May and September are ideal — warm enough for comfortable riding without the peak summer heat or crowds. July and August can be very hot on exposed routes, particularly around Lake Balaton and the Great Plain.

Navigation and Maps

The Hungarian cycling network is well mapped on OpenStreetMap, which means apps like OsmAnd and Komoot work reliably. EuroVelo route signs (particularly EV6 along the Danube) are generally consistent, though local markings can be less clear in rural areas.
