Routes Written from the Saddle
Zenviminova is a personal project documenting cycling routes across Hungary. Every guide is based on rides I have actually completed.
Who Writes This
My name is Marton Szabo. I live in Budapest and work in urban planning, which is how I first became interested in how cities and regions handle cycling infrastructure. In 2019, I started riding regularly around Budapest, initially as a way to commute, and gradually as a way to explore the country beyond the capital.
What began as weekend rides along the Danube grew into longer trips around Lake Balaton, through the Danube Bend, and across sections of the Great Plain. I found that while Hungary has genuinely good cycling routes, finding practical and reliable information about them in English was surprisingly difficult. Most resources were either in Hungarian or written by people who had not actually ridden the routes they were describing.
What This Site Covers
The route guides here focus on practical information for cyclists who are actually planning to ride. Each guide includes details about surface quality, signage, water and food stops, seasonal considerations, and infrastructure like bike rental or repair shops along the way.
I try to describe routes as they actually are, including the sections that are less pleasant or where the infrastructure falls short. A stretch of beautiful scenery is not much help if the road surface is broken up and there is no shade for twenty kilometres.
The site currently covers three main areas: Budapest city cycling, the Lake Balaton circuit, and the Danube Bend route north of the capital. I plan to add more guides over time, particularly for the EuroVelo 6 corridor and some of the lesser-known routes in the Transdanubian hills.
What This Site Is Not
Zenviminova is not a travel agency, a tour company, or a tourism promotion platform. I do not sell tours, accept sponsored content, or receive payment for recommending businesses, accommodation, or services. If I mention a bike shop or a restaurant in a guide, it is because I found it useful during my own ride.
The external links on this site point to authoritative resources like official tourism websites and mapping tools. I do not use affiliate links.
